Coffeehouse observation No. 31

Someone must have been a little distracted earlier. The put the coffee beans in the maker – without grinding them. Oops! The coffee came out and little, um, thin.

Hmm! The coffee is particularly good today. Just the right bight without being bitter. And the caffeine is kicking in nicely.

Coffeehouse oberservation No. 28

Coffeehouse patrons flow in and out of the coffeehouse like the tide. They come in waves and the leave in waves. And just now, it is a calm ocean.

I just saw a guy in a burgundy Zoot suit outside the coffeehouse smoking loose tobacco from what appeared to be a straight marijuana pipe. Ah, Stockton, you never fail to disappoint in your vast collection of characters.

Caffeinated angry people shouldn’t abuse their laptops and talk out loud in the coffeehouse.

Coffeehouse observation No. 25

Another day, the same faces. We humans seem to be caffeine-fueled creatures of habit. I see many of the same people wonder in and out of the coffeehouse every day that I am here.

I am not sure if the men’s room at one coffeehouse I frequent has been cleaned since I started patronizing it nearly a year ago. It’s almost as if it’s 8 ft. X 8 ft. X 8 ft. Petri dish. Seriously!

Coffeehouse observation No. 22

This past summer and fall, when the economy seemed not to rebound, I took some comfort and hope, because young couples were taking the biggest chance that the future would be better — they were having babies. Young couples would pop into the coffeehouse with babies or about to have babies. When couples have children, they are betting on a better future. And that’s OK with me.

Everyone has heard of barroom fights, but has anyone heard of a coffeehouse fight? I think not. Perhaps coffee is the beverage of peace. Do you suppose there’s a Noble prize in this for me?

Large. Medum. Small. Those are sizes for coffee. Not some snooty effort to make us order coffee in a foreign language.

Coffeehouse observation No. 12

Hot coffee is good! Warm coffee, not so much. Cold coffee … only to get through a 24-hour shift on the fireline. (I was a wildland firefighter for three summers while attending college. We would put hot coffee in our canteens at dinner time as we were leaving for a 24-hour shift and drink it even if it was ice-cold. The caffeine worked. — KM)
